Kim BlueKim Blue isn’t in the real estate business just for the money–ironically that’s probably the reason she’s had so much success.

Kim is a Realtor in Livonia, Michigan at Real Estate One.  When I spoke with her earlier this week, I asked Kim why she loves her job. She gave me one of the best responses I’ve ever heard: “People who are buying and selling their homes are often on the verge of achieving their dreams. They’re starting a family or moving across the country or finally retiring. I love being a part of such a big moment in people’s lives and feeling like I’m doing them a service.”

As you’d expect from someone with such deep dedication to her customers, Kim Blue has some great customer reviews on her Stik profile. Kim tells me that sometimes her reviews almost make her cry. “You don’t realize how much you did for somebody,” she told me. “You think you did a good job, and then somebody writes something that absolutely blows you away.”

Kim isn’t the only one who finds her reviews powerful. Many of Kim’s current customers found Kim when they stumbled across her reviews online. Recently, Kim closed deals with two new clients, both in the half-million dollar range. These two clients had no connection to Kim before deciding to work with her, but they chose Kim because they searched for local Realtors online and came across Kim’s great reviews. “If you show potential clients that you put them first, and you show them who you are, there’s a chance that you’ll really connect.” Kim told me. “Lots of people tell me to put less about myself online, but I disagree. I think there are a lot of people who really value being able to get to know a professional online before making a decision.”

Kim also told me how much she values Stik’s customer service, particularly her Client Success Manager, John Caponigro. “When I started on Stik, I had three reviews. Just three. John helped me collect 44 great reviews and I owe so much to his hard work. There are times when I call him and I’m sure I’ll get his voicemail. But John always takes my call.” Kim says she’s tried other companies for marketing herself online, but Stik is her favorite. “All the support you guys give at Stik and the dedication to all of us is amazing. We don’t get that at other companies. They look at you like you’re a number. I’ve never felt that way at Stik.”

Elise Groves and TiberiusElise Groves is a mortgage broker with almost 20 years of experience who lives and works in beautiful northern California wine country city of Santa Rosa.  Elise, her business partner and son Glenn, also a mortgage broker, and the dogs, Tiberius and Jedi, form The Groves Team of First Priority Financial.  Frequently referring to themselves as ‘Your Mortgage Retrievers,’ the Groves Team is dedicated to helping clients make intelligent decisions when financing their homes.

A little under a month ago, Elise began using Stik’s premium services to collect reviews from her clients and display them on her website. In less than 30 days, Elise collected great 50 reviews from past clients and business associates and received a new referral.

For Elise, it’s especially important to be able to reach out to potential customers online. Elise’s clients are primarily Millennials who are buying their first homes
Elise Groves and Glen Groves
and need help navigating the financial hurdles of choosing and qualifying for a mortgage. Elise engages with clients through Facebook and other social networks, publishes weekly blog posts with tips and potential pitfalls of getting financing (complete with some great memes), and often makes informal videos featuring Tiberius and Jedi. Using Stik, Elise has been able to expand her online presence and increase her visibility online. Elise worked with John Caponigro, our Client Services Representative, to collect nearly two great reviews a day from happy past clients for the past 30 days. Elise’s reviews now show up in Google searches, on her website, and on her personal and business Facebook pages.

Elise was so impressed with Stik’s premium services that within the first week of using Stik she referred us 17 of her friends, family, and colleagues.  Elise is quickly becoming a Stik evangelist and we’re so happy to have her on our side!

Here’s one of the 50 outstanding reviews that Elise has already collected on Stik.  My favorite line?  “I rely on Elise Groves and she always comes through.”  Is there any higher praise you can get from a client?

Clint WomackClint Womack is a mortgage broker and correspondent lender from Salt Lake City, UT.  He’s the President of Vintage Lending, a small team of mortgage professionals focused on building relationships with clients and providing exceptional customer service.  A former D1-AA football star, Clint enjoys the outdoors and spending time with his family.

How did you get into the mortgage industry?

Initially, I planned to do mortgages as a side business during medical school.  After much soul searching, I decided to put medical school on hold and pursue and career in real estate.

What is your favorite thing about being a mortgage broker?

Helping clients save money and finding custom solutions for difficult scenarios.

How important are word-of-mouth referrals for your business?

Word of mouth referrals are the most important part of my business; they drive my success and keep my momentum.

What do you do to make sure you have a presence online?

I have been focusing on improving my content and making it more interesting and relevant by using a variety of websites and services.

How has Stik helped your business?

In less than a month, Stik helped me get 41 reviews and drive more traffic to my website.

What is one of the nicest things one of your reviewers wrote about you on your Stik page?

Here’s a great review I got from a client:

“Clint was our Realtor when we bought our first house. He was very patient with us as we put offers in on 4 different houses only to have them turned down. Finally we found one that has been our home and sanctuary for the last 5 years. He did an excellent job in helping us through the process of buying a home since we were first time buyers and had no idea what we were doing. He was honest, reliable and never pushy. He helped us get a fantastic deal on a home in a great neighborhood that I am not sure we could have gotten with someone else.”

- Matthew Goms

Can you tell a story about a time that you really went above and beyond for a client?

I had a client that was going through a divorce, a bankruptcy, and various other challenges all at the same time.  He needed to sell his home, but the bankruptcy and divorce created complications for the transaction.  I spent hours on the phone with the bankruptcy trustee and divorce lawyers negotiating a deal that made everyone happy and we were able to complete the transaction.  My client was extremely grateful in the end, and it felt amazing to work through so many obstacles and finish the deal.

What advice would you give to someone just starting out in the mortgage industry today?

Be patient. It takes time to learn the business and develop relationships.  If you focus on the client and not the commission, you will have a long and successful career.

If you could board a plane for anywhere in the world right now, where would it be and why?

Greece.  I’ve always wanted to see the beaches and the historical sites there.

What is your favorite part about living in Salt Lake City, UT?

We have 5 incredible parks within a few miles of our home.  We live in Sugar House and can walk to parks, restaurants, banks, the library, post office, shops, and more.  Everything is so accessible and there isn’t a lot of traffic.  There are 4 world-class ski resorts within 20 minutes of home and the cost of living and job market are both excellent in Utah.

Sizzor ShakWe’re convinced that Sizzor Shak, a hair salon in Collinsville, IL, is filled with marketing geniuses.  They’re highly engaged with their clients on social media and they regularly run contests that gather feedback from their customers and build their credibility.  As someone who spent several months of seventh grade with a mullet like Florence Henderson’s on the Brady Bunch, I can say from personal experience that trusting your stylist is extremely important.

We’re proud to say that in their most recent contest, Sizzor Shak asked their Facebook fans to write them reviews on Stik and they got some great responses (they also gathered enough reviews on Stik to become the top ranked beautician in Illinois).

The winner, Katie Beatty Recklein, wrote SizzorShak a wonderful review:

Katie Beatty Recklein's Review

We hope Katie enjoyed the free cut and style she won.  When we heard about Sizzor Shak’s contest, we felt like we won something too.  You should have seen the way this video got shared around the office.  It makes us so happy to see small businesses succeeding, especially when we were able to help.

Phil CaulfieldPhil Caulfield, a mortgage broker at WJ Bradley Mortgage Capital, has 27 years of experience as a loan officer for purchases and refinances.  He lives in his favorite place in the world, Burlingame, CA, with his wife and seven children.  In his spare time, Phil plays golf, coaches basketball and baseball, and watches funny TV shows like Curb Your Enthusiasm.  He can also multiply any two-digit number by any other two digit number in less than 10 seconds.

How did you get into the mortgage industry?

I have wanted to be a loan agent since I was in kindergarten. (Seriously!) After I graduated from Santa Clara University, I spent some time with my parents in Washington D.C., but decided that I wanted to return to the Bay Area. I had some friends who had just started in the industry with a local savings and loan company. Ironically, the office manager was the baseball coach who had cut me from the team as a freshman at Santa Clara. And yet…he hired me! Twenty-seven years later, here I am.

What is your favorite thing about being a mortgage broker?

My favorite part of being a loan agent is building long-term relationships with both clients and those involved in our industry.

How important are word-of-mouth referrals for your business?

Word of mouth is very important because the person who is referred to me already trusts me.  The referrer has validated my ability to get the job done.

What do you do to make sure you have a presence online?

I have a presence on all of the large social networks as well as a blog that I write. I also help real estate agents utilize social media to grow their business. The help I give them sets me apart from other people in the loan business.  Instead of asking them for business, I help them grow their own!

How has Stik helped your business?

I display reviews on the side of my blog. Having the Stik reviews displayed on my blog helps build trust because the reviews are right in front of my readers – they can’t help but notice them!

What is one of the nicest things one of your reviewers has written about you on your Stik page?

Here’s a review that made me feel great: “I’ve known Phil for 30+ ‘years. He is a man of character, has a strong work ethic, and does what he says. He is dependable, reliable, and trustworthy. I don’t need to go any further.”

Can you tell a story about a time that you really went above and beyond for a client?

My wife Liz and I have seven children, so I have a weakness for big families. One of my clients has a family with six children and doesn’t make a lot of money. Although their loan amount is not very big and I don’t get paid very much, I have always been there for them through thick and thin, and will continue to do so!

What advice would you give to someone just starting out in the mortgage industry today?

I would suggest being an assistant for one year to gain knowledge and confidence about what to do and how to do it.  Find a seasoned loan agent looking for help and pick his or her brain about every part of the job.

If you could board a plane for anywhere in the world right now, where would it be and why?

I would love to take my wife and kids to Hawaii for a week. We have not had the chance to vacation a whole lot because my kids have sports activities nearly every day of the year. A relaxing week in Hawaii with nothing to work on or worry about would be great!

What is your favorite part about living in Burlingame, CA?

I love Burlingame! It’s halfway to everywhere! I have lived here most of my life. I love knowing the history of the town and sharing it with my kids (whether they want to listen or not). We have the most beautiful amateur baseball field in the Bay Area (Washington Park). I have recently been thinking about how great it would be for Washington Park to host a huge baseball tournament for older boys (17-22 years old). A tournament like this would add to the history to this great town! I’m going to make it happen!

Carly SzydlowskiCarly Szydlowski was born and raised in Keego Harbor, and graduated from Western Michigan University with a degree in Family Studies & Child Development. She’s an Alpha Phi alumna, fast food connoisseur, and professional organizer who loves puzzles, collecting coffee cups, and spending summer days on the lakeshore.

1. When you were seven years old, what did you say you wanted to do when you grew up?

A professional dancer or mom!

2. You almost singlehandedly make everything in our office function. What’s your secret?

Sticky notes — lots of them — and some obsessive organization.

3. What are five uncommon uses of a brick, not including building, layering, or paper-weight?

As a door stopper, to keep meat from floating up when defrosting in water, to weigh down a dresser that can’t hold the drawer weight, to hide a key under, and to throw at someone who is annoying you (joking!).

4. When people visit you in Detroit, what’s the first thing you show them?

Usually the lake (depending on the weather). Otherwise, I take them downtown for a game and food.

Culhane SistersMary Jane Culhane (second from right) runs Culhane’s Irish Pub in Atlantic Beach, FL with three of her sisters. Having immigrated to the U.S. from Ireland, Mary Jane and her sisters work tirelessly to create an authentic Irish pub experience for their many patrons. Since opening in 2005, Culhane’s has been featured on the Food Network’s Diners, Drive-ins, and Dives and has been recognized as a “Beaches Business Leader” by the Jacksonville Chamber of Commerce. According to UrbanSpoon, Culhane’s currently ranks as the 46th top restaurant in the U.S. — an incredible feat. Read on to learn how Mary Jane and her sisters are using Stik to help their business grow even more.

What is your favorite thing about running an Irish pub?

Keeping the Irish traditions alive and working with my sisters.

How did Culhane’s come to be? What’s your history?

Let’s start at the beginning…! I was raised on a dairy farm near Shanagolden village in County Limerick, Ireland. The middle sibling of five girls & one brother, I immigrated at the age of 19 and became the first in my family to become a U.S. citizen. Stateside, I first lived in St. Paul, Minnesota, and then moved to Jacksonville, FL as a senior mortgage underwriter with a large financial institution. I excelled as a mortgage banker, but decided — with baby Patrick on the way! — that it was time to pursue a career that would allow more flexibility. Three of my sisters were living in the area at the time, and with their extensive restaurant experience and my marketing background, Culhane’s Irish Pub became the natural next step for all of us. We opened our doors in 2005, and haven’t looked back since!

How important are word-of-mouth referrals for your business?Culhane's Pub Logo

Extremely important! We need referrals to grow our clientele.

What do you do to make sure you have a presence online?

I spend at least two hours on social media every day.

What is one of the nicest things one of your reviewers wrote about you on your Stik page?

Erika Hall wrote, “The Culhane sisters are consummate hospitality professionals. They make every guest feel like a part of the family, and ply you with fabulous foods and beverages, excellent service, and great entertainment, ranging from traditional Irish music to the latest Celtic rock and pop. Best of all, they love to see you come back… and you will want to go back!”

If you had to name the most exciting or meaningful event at Culhane’s, what would it be?

Having Guy Fieri (from the Food Network) visit Culhane’s and spotlight our pub on national & international television! We were featured on the “Comfort Food with Attitude” episode of Diners, Drive-ins, and Dives, and the YouTube clip of our segment along has already garnered 50,000 views. Wow!

What advice would you give to someone just starting out in the restaurant/bar business today?

Work hard and love what you do. Be passionate. Hire stars and treat your guests like kings and queens. Be authentic and don’t follow the pack.

If you could board a plane for anywhere in the world right now, where would it be and why?

Ballyneety, Shanagolden, Ireland — to visit our home farm and spend time with family.

What is your favorite part about living in Atlantic Beach, FL?

Morning jogs are priceless on our beautiful, pristine beach. Feels like I’m on vacation every day. It’s a small village of friends where everyone knows your name. The sun always shines!
